LULU is a smaller version of our other portable bathrooms, perfect for golf courses, soccer, polo, and baseball fields. These mobile restrooms come with the ability to be electrically or solar powered. If electric, the unit can be fully heated or air conditioned. If solar powered, the portable unit has modified climate control through the use of vent fans, which makes it friendly to the environment.

While LULU is a single unit, it is still a fully functional portable bathroom. This unit provides fresh water and soap for a complete sanitary hand wash, flushable toilets, as well as absolute privacy. LULU is larger than the standard porta potty, but smaller than a full restroom trailer, while still providing comfort and security. That’s why it’s so appealing!

The 2013 Kentucky Derby takes place this Saturday, May 4. It is a longstanding, prestigious, historical event that was started in 1875, almost 138 years ago. It is known to us as “the fastest two minutes in sports”, or the “Run for the Roses”, since the winner gets a blanket of roses draped over them at the finish line. For horses and jockeys it is the culmination of a career full of hard work and training, as well as the most prestigious race of a lifetime.

For spectators, it is a tradition filled with parties, food, drinks, and some of the most elaborate hats and clothes, worn by those looking to be seen. And although the extravagant seats of “Millionaire’s Row” are the most coveted, they are usually reserved by the rich, famous, and those who have connections. In this case, it’s not what you know, but who you know.

While the Kentucky Derby is one of the most entertaining and enjoyable events to attend, this year will most assuredly have a different feeling to it since the security will, without a doubt, be tighter and more prevalent. As far as new security measures go, all entering spectators will be subject to an electronic scan, and any diaper bags or purses (of allowable size) are subject to a search. So it is advised that you arrive earlier than planned to accommodate these new safety and search procedures. There are other changes to policies and procedures that you should be aware of before making your way to the races, such as allowable camera types, coolers, and refreshment.

Portable Restroom Trailers at the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event

The Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event is almost here! The event kicks off Thursday, April 25th and continues to Sunday, April 28th (They never changed the name when the event grew to a fourth day.).

If you have never been to this great event at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY you have been missing out. It is a fun and exciting demonstration of top riders of the international horse sport with their best horses in the highest classes of competition.

The event consists of three events; dressage, cross-country, and show jumping. It is at the same four star level of competition that the Olympics run on.

The contestants are chomping at the bit to win their share of the $250,000 prize money and a shot at the $350,000 Rolex Grand Slam of Eventing award. Last year’s winner, William Fox-Pitt, will be returning. Also in the running are several Olympic riders.

The event is a great way to kick off the Kentucky Derby which takes place the following weekend, May 3rd.

Another great reason to attend is the Trade Fair. There will be over 175 merchants, corporate sponsors and food vendors to offer all horse lovers something to enjoy. It is a truly enormous gathering of interesting booths and people.

While providing restroom trailers for the PGA tour, we’ve seen some pretty funny things out there on the course. Here are a few funny predicaments professional golfers have found themselves in.

FORE!

Last year Paul Lawrie was delayed from teeing off by another golfer walking right out onto the fairway in front of him. Matt Kuchar was on his way to the restroom when he suddenly realized he was cutting through another hole. He waved and hustled out of the way of Lawrie. After Kuchar had finished his business in the portable restroom he apologized to Lawrie. When you gotta go, you gotta go!

SAVE THAT FOR THE RESTROOM

Last week Andreas Harto’s shot went into the water just short of the green. Rather than take a penalty stroke he decided to hit it out of the water and came within 15 yards of the hole! He would have looked impressive if he hadn’t taken off his shoes, socks, and pants in order to make the shot! After climbing back out of the water he waddled over to mark his ball before finally putting his pants back on. Outside of the portable restroom pants are part of the dress code, Harto!

COMING UP SHORTS

Speaking of dress codes, in 1983 Forrest Fezler staged a protest of the leagues ‘no shorts’ dress code. In between the 17th and 18th holes he ducked in to the portable restroom and emerged without the pants he had been wearing during the match (Luckily he had only swapped them out for a pair of shorts). He finished his round in shorts as fans and other golfers applauded his statement to the league. Since then the dress code has not changed, we won’t be seeing any shorts this week!

Golf and the Masters Tournament have seen and heard from some interesting stories and characters in its long history. There’s no telling what’s in store for us this week. Luckily there will be plenty of bathroom trailers so golfers won’t have to run through shots to get to them. I’m sure we’ll still be in for a few antics this year!

Portable Restrooms Using Games?

Health and sanitation go hand in hand, especially when it comes to the public. More specifically, public restrooms. There are some new gadgets that are making their debut in men’s bathrooms all over the world, which can help with both sanitation and health. Never has peeing been so fun!

One product plays off the fact that the male gender instinctively likes to aim at things while urinating. And if you’re wondering, no…age makes no difference. So in order to keep more in the urinal and less out of it, places like airports, stadiums, and even schools are putting flies in the urinals. No, not real ones! They're using fly decals and etchings above the drains in urinals as something to aim for. This approach of trying to keep bathrooms cleaner seems to be working. One airport manager reported that shortly after the flies were introduced they had an 80% decrease in spills than previously. So if this does work, imagine the cost and maintenance reductions, as well as the hygiene and health increases of those using them!

Also new on the market for public bathrooms are urinal communication devices from Wizmark. These little gadgets are placed over the drain and talk to you as you’re going. They can be equipped with advertisements, reminders, or just funny messages to pass the time, and can be placed in any environment from bars to office buildings to restroom trailers. They are extremely significant for two reasons: a great way of mass advertising, and an excellent way to raise awareness for health issues, such as prostate screenings. They are also good reminders for remembering to zip up and wash hands!

Last but not least is the granddaddy of them all…urinal video games! Lehigh Valley’s IronPigs Minor League Baseball team is the first to install this kind of system in the U.S. - it’s already a huge success in the UK.

It’s a screen above the urinal that starts a game as soon as it senses someone and is completely controlled by the urine stream. Once they player is finished, their score gets posted on video scoreboards throughout the stadium. When no one is using it the urinal screen displays ads. This was all done in an effort to raise prostate health awareness. "Baseball, above all, is about team, and so is prostate health,” Dr. Angelo Baccala of the Lehigh Valley Health Network told MiLB.com. “Men should work together with their physician to devise a game plan that makes sense for them." Once again we’re seeing hygiene and health go hand in hand.

Not only do these fun and new tactics work in permanent public restrooms, but they can be just as effective in portable bathrooms as well. They can enhance the effort of providing cleaner, safer portable restroom trailers. All this new bathroom technology is sure to improve sanitation, help develop better habits, and ultimately improve health.

Tailgating with Portable Restrooms at NASCAR

With the STP Gas Booster 500 in Martinsville next week it’s a good time to think about tailgating the next NASCAR race. Whether it is your first tailgating event or you have been going for years everyone puts some extra planning into their tailgate. For the newcomers it is time to figure out the perfect set up. For the veterans it is time to make their tailgate even bigger and better than last time.

It is important to get to the race early to get a good spot. You want to be comfortable. Leave yourself enough space to set up everything you’ve brought. Get a spot close to the portable restrooms so you don’t have to walk too far.

While you will obviously have your own particular needs, here are a few extra things to consider bringing.

Serving spoons, spatulas, and knives. You don’t want to have to serve heavy portions with plastic spoons or try to flip a burger with a plastic fork.

Separate coolers for food and drinks. The drink coolers will be opened much more often. You don’t want people getting drinks to make your food spoil.

Portable phone charger. You don’t want to get stranded or lose a friend because your phone dies.

Ice. You will go through a ton of ice. Try freezing water bottles the night before and putting them in your coolers. They will keep your food and drinks cold and when they thaw you will have drinking water.

Portable Restroom Trailer. If you have a large enough group, consider bringing your own restroom trailer. This will save you from the walk and the long lines that can accumulate. You will also be much more comfortable with your own toilet and hand wash station.

Easter is around the corner, and with that oftentimes come egg hunts in fields with Easter Bunny visits, church picnics and events, and in some areas, sunrise services on the beach or in a park. All have in common one thing…the need for sufficient outdoor portable bathrooms.

Although an event or service might be held on church grounds, it may be more lucrative and convenient to provide additional outdoor portable restrooms, especially if you are expecting a large attendance or the event is spread out over a significant area. Daylight savings this past weekend has really put me into the spring mood. The days are getting longer, the weather is getting nicer, and I am ready to get outside for some great spring events! It seems that the European influence on Americans is strong when it comes to privacy in restrooms. As one bathroom supplier and distributor states, “The restrooms in Europe and their mounting are a little different than ours. They also tend to be more private too -- almost floor to ceiling.” The standards for privacy in Europe are higher than in the U.S., and people are catching on.

Right now it looks as if gyms, major airports, and office buildings are the mainstream businesses looking to raise the bar for privacy standards in their restrooms. They’ve realized that as a result of these improvements, their employees and clients will be more comfortable. And when you have happy clients and employees, you have a better business.

Not only can this trend increase employee morale, or improve client satisfaction, but perhaps it can have a positive effect on health as well. Officials have been investigating a case where a young girl spontaneously caught fire in her hospital bed. The 11-year-old cancer survivor’s accident is now said to have been caused by hand sanitizer.

"We found that given the mixture of the olive oil and the hand sanitizer on the cotton shirt, it was like a candle wick that was easily ignited by the static that was in the bedding and clothing in her room," Deputy State Fire Marshal Dan Jones confirmed.

The unusual incident is another reason why many portable restroom companies are switching away from alcohol based hand sanitizer. This type of sanitizer has also been the cause of many cases of vandalism where portable restrooms are set on fire by igniting the alcohol based sanitizer containers.

The Sequester’s Effect on National Parks

Unless Congress can vote on a new budget change, the Sequester is going into effect March 1^st. The Washington Post has investigated what this means for the National Parks Department.

Advocates for the vast numbers of visitors to America’s national parks are pressuring Congress to prevent deep automatic spending cuts that would result in reduced hours and services across the country, from the Blue Ridge Mountains to Yellowstone.

The National Park’s budget is 80-90% staff which will make it very difficult to avoid losing park personnel.

According to Lisa Rein, “The prospect of dirtier restrooms, sporadic grass mowing and litter pickup, and a shortage of rangers to answer questions and patrol has set off a furious campaign by a coalition of park advocates, tourism officials and businesses from to Maine to Wyoming.”

The Triumph: Sewage At Sea

Triumph’s breakdown at sea while carrying over 4,200 passengers, including elderly and children, has given rise to a multitude of debates. One of the topics that have come to light is that of sewage. The engine room fire shut everything down, ultimately paralyzing the cruise ship. This resulted in the loss of air conditioning, as well as the function of most of the restroom facilities. From this incident, there have been stories of passengers having to go to the bathroom in red plastic bags, sewage dripping down walls, and feces floating in the water due to the malfunctions and lack of bathroom availability.

Regardless of whether those stories are true or not, they bring up a good topic of concern. The issue of sewage directly affecting our health is a growing matter. It greatly impacts everyone, young and old. Let’s assume that the bathroom situation on the ship was somewhere in the middle with regards to the stories told. How would that be any different than an everyday porta potty that sits in direct sunlight, closed in with no ventilation in the heat of the summer?

This year’s Super Bowl saw an even greater increase in female viewers than ever before. With nearly 50% of viewers being women, sporting events such as football and NASCAR races aren’t just for men anymore. Women are immersing themselves in the sport, whether it’ going to the game clad in team apparel, or planning a mega tailgating party.

Tailgating is one area where this change has been seen. Tailgaters are creating more elaborate set-ups and food to make their whole group comfortable for the big game. We’ve talked about the growth of home gating. People want to celebrate the game without leaving the comforts of their home, so the comforts need to be brought to them.

Additionally, races and walks is another area that has seen an increase in female participation. More women have been participating in marathons, run/walks for causes, and cross-state bike rides. Women's Health reports that the number of people who've finished a half-marathon has more than tripled since 2000, and a whopping 59 percent of finishers are women.

What event planners can learn from this new trend is to prepare for an increase in the need for women’s facilities. A better stocked and higher quality bathroom is a must for all events now.- why?

Tailgating can be a great experience. It’s exciting, competitive, and fun. But what happens when you can’t or don’t want to go to the game? You bring it home! It’s the newest trend called Homegating.

Homegating is essentially the new tailgating. It’s bringing the tailgating party into your home for a more personal experience. In the past, tailgaters have been mostly men, but today it’s a growing trend among women. Statistics say that 44% of the NFL fan base is now women. Women are getting more involved in spectator sports, above and beyond just watching games.

The NFL has recognized this new trend, and in conjunction with Holly Robinson Peete whose husband is an ex NFL player, has created a line of Homegating tools and accessories with team logos, that likely appeal to women. The idea is to make Homegating a family oriented event for everyone to be involved in while still watching and cheering for your favorite team. From apparel, to decorations, to food, the options are endless!

Farmers Look To Restroom Trailers For Compliance With Field Sanitation Laws

How does providing safe and sanitary bathroom facilities for those working hard to harvest our fruit and veggies effect you and I?

Chew on this…without a clean and sanitary place to go to the bathroom and wash their hands, the food that they harvest may be full of bacteria and other hazardous organisms.

Here’s a scenario to consider: Imagine that the bathroom facility is a mile away, there’s no vehicle to take you, and you have to go badly, but you don’t want to take that long going all the way to the bathrooms anyway because you have a quota to make and you need to get paid. As a result, you decide to go off to the side to do your business. Were you far enough away that it didn’t affect the soil? How did you wash your hands?

It’s possible that soil that has been exposed to defecation or urine can transfer bacteria to the plants. Harmful organisms can also be transferred to the plants by unclean hands. That’s not to say that any time there’s a contamination outbreak that’s the case, but it can happen.

The government recognizes this and has produced a Field Sanitation law under the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). In addition, some states that have a large farming industry have created Acts that are similar to the government provisions, but are more detailed regulations for the farm owners and managers to follow. Illinois is one of those states. It has issued the Field Sanitation Act, which gives a very clear explanation of how every farm that employs 10 or more workers must provide hygienic bathroom and drinking facilities. It states that they can be permanent structures or portable bathrooms, but they must provide private toilets with toilet paper, clean water and soap for hand washing, as well as a way to adequately dry hands. The conditions of those portable restrooms must be sanitarily maintained, safe, and sufficiently ventilated; no more than ¼ of a mile away from the location of any one worker.

It seems that more farming states have caught on to these regulations and are following suit, since more cases of contaminated produce resulting in sick consumers are popping up. Because of this, many farmers are now looking to restroom trailers as their facility solution. They are easy to relocate, safe, private, and sanitary. Furthermore, they provide conditions that exceed government standards and won’t break the budget.

If you think about it, everything is connected in one way or another. Working conditions affect those who harvest the fields, which effect how clean our food is, which ultimately affects our health. So is it safe to say, “you are what you eat”?

Can you guess the one detail of an outdoor event that we’ve been called about at the last minute time and time again? You guessed it…it’s the bathroom arrangement! My Park Restroom Experience

I visited a beautiful park the other day. It had a huge playground, widespread fields for a game of Frisbee or Football, an enormous skate park, and a long walking/running trail of red stones. There was even a small splash section to cool off in the summer time. It was a park that you could go and spend hours at.

Unfortunately I found that the restroom facility had been blocked off due to construction. I thought, “Surely, a park as elaborate as this would have another set of restrooms”, so I walked around to see if there was another building that contained restrooms. I couldn’t find any. To my surprise, the only bathrooms available were two porta potties!

I gathered up the courage to look inside and nearly gagged. They both looked (and smelled) as if they hadn’t been cleaned in months! They smelled putrid, the toilets were just about full, and one of them had toilet paper stuck everywhere while the other had no toilet paper at all. Needless to say, I did not enter.

I was sorely disappointed and here’s why... That community took such care, and put so much thought and effort into the park for their residents, as well as residents of other communities; yet they failed to think of and provide an adequate facility solution during the renovation.

So many times the temporary bathroom solution falls through the cracks. Realizing that regardless of whether you’re a large corporation or a community park, providing an exceptional facility for your employees or residents will show that you care about their health, safety, and overall well being, which will result in enhanced productivity or community.

‘Tis the season for shopping!

According to ShopperTrak, this week will be the highest sales volume week of the year, culminating with Saturday, aka “Super Saturday”, being among the five busiest shopping days of the season. With all these shoppers stopping every now and then to grab a drink or bite to eat, you’re sure to stumble upon a line at the restroom. And we all know that a long restroom line means a dirty and messy bathroom experience. So, here are some tips to stay clean and healthy during your holiday shopping expedition:

1. Carry sanitizer in your bag. Use it every time you think of it, especially before and after entering the restroom.

2. Use the toilet covers that are provided. If there aren’t any, use toilet paper to cover the seat before sitting. (If all else fails, squat!)

3. Flush the toilet with your foot to avoid touching the germs on the handle.

4. Use plenty of soap, lather well, and rub vigorously for about 20 seconds before rinsing, advises the Mayo Clinic.

5. Use a towel to turn off the faucet, unless it turns off automatically.

6. Dry your hands completely with an air dryer or paper towel. Hopefully they are automatic so that you don’t have to touch them with clean hands.

7. Try not to touch the door on the way out. If you do, grab that handy little sanitizer that you put in your bag.

One of the most memorable activities as a kid during the holiday season was watching all the special TV shows that come on during the week leading to Thanksgiving Day. A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving would come on a few days before, Thanksgiving morning the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade would be on, and in the afternoon, football would take over.

For kids, it’s exciting. Holidays mean staying up late, watching special shows on TV, eating lots of different food, and seeing family that have been away. For adults, nothing really changes. It still means shopping, playing, talking, and laughing. For some it means giving our time and serving others, while some may receive the benefit of being served.

The things that we cherish most, however, are the lifetime of memories that come from family and friends gathering together. This is the time of year where we take a step back to reflect and give thanks for everything we have. It’s a great opportunity to teach the little ones about tradition, change, humility, and thankfulness.

We’re in the middle of football season and tailgating is one of the most popular ways to celebrate, eat, drink, and of course, show off. As one article puts it, “It’s an all-day ritual- a divine potluck of a family reunion, cocktail hour, and fashion show that keeps us coming back year after year, decade after decade, to the same sun-drenched fields.”

Whether you live in the orth, south, east, or west, tailgating is a tradition that happens everywhere, though, there are regional differences as to what kind of games are more popular for tailgating at. Generally speaking, the professional games are where the tailgaters show up in the Northern Midwest and Northeast. But all along the Southern region, college games are where it’s serious. There, you have tailgaters that may or may not even have tickets. For them, it’s no big deal...they come equipped with tents, TVs, chairs, and plenty of food and drinks. They have a “private party”, all while hearing the live cheers and jeers from inside the stadium. What more could you ask for?

Teri Pahon, owner of Portable Restroom Trailers, was contacted by Police Chief Boyd from Seaside Heights, NJ, one of the hardest hit communities from Hurricane Sandy. Chief Boyd spoke with Pahon on Wednesday to inquire about having restroom and shower trailers sent to New Jersey for the relief workers. Pahon was also contacted by a Post Office in order to keep the offices open and running in the areas that had lost power and water, and additionally by another community for portable restrooms for their Fire Department. Pahon responded immediately and sent the portable trailers to NJ for the Post Office and emergency personnel to use.

Since much of the Jersey Shore was without power, gas, and water, that meant there was nowhere for the emergency response teams to shower, wash hands, or even answer nature’s call. They needed help and Portable Restroom Trailers offered a quick solution.

“Even without water, we will be installing portable tanks and refilling water and providing a pumper service as they need it,” stated Pahon.

Within twenty-four hours, Pahon’s company had their trailers up and running with heat and hot water.

Shower Trailers Called Into Action for the National Guard

It’s not often that we talk or hear about shower trailers, but it doesn’t mean that they aren’t as important or useful as restroom trailers. In fact, shower trailers were used by the National Guard after Hurricane Isaac blew through New Orleans.

According to The Daily Reveille, some National Guard members were called into active duty after the hurricane to help the citizens of New Orleans. They handed out supplies, assisted those in need, helped with the cleanup effort, and worked with the Army to provide security throughout the city. Each day they woke up early, and returned very late to the convention center. Since the facility doesn’t have showers, they had to use a portable shower trailer for their showers each night.

Decorated Porta Potty Races??

Have you ever seen a decorated porta potty rolling down the street??

For most of us, the answer is “no” and even the idea is outrageous. But to the residents of Iowa, the experience is not unusual. Every year at the Iowa State Fair there is a competition that involves portable toilets and decorations…it’s called the Outhouse Races. In order to race, you must customize and create your own “outhouse”. It has to have a half door, resembling a real outhouse, and must have a toilet seat over the “throne hole” for the rider. Each team must include four people, a team captain, two to push, and one to ride/steer.

Not only is it a race, but it’s an obstacle race! There are two obstacles that the team and portable potty must encounter and successfully maneuver through to get to the finish line. Once all the teams have competed, awards are given to the first, second, third place teams, as well as to the team with the best house. As crazy as this event sounds, it seems like one of the most entertaining and amusing competitions to watch, and probably even more hysterical for those participating!

Who knew?!? There are so many more uses for portable toilets than just the “normal” practical purposes!

If you think porta potties are only used for one purpose, think again!

Professional sports teams have utilized the portable bathrooms for drills during practice. Bizarre, right?!? It is said that the Patriots came up with this outlandish training method in 1994 to help their tight ends with their eye-hand coordination, as well as concentration when receiving the ball amidst the many distractions.

A couple of years ago however, the Chiefs adopted the eccentric training technique to use for their players. What they did was have one player sit inside on the portable toilet and have another player outside holding the door closed. Then the coach would throw the ball and the player holding the door would swing it open at the last minute so that they player inside would have to quickly focus, get his hands up, and catch the ball before it hit him.

I admit, it does sound strange…but it’s a creative way of teaching and learning. No longer is the portable potty only good for one function!

We will have one restroom trailer at the welcoming party on Sunday at the Raptor Center, one behind the stage designated for the Dignitaries and Heads of State, and one designated for the Google Corporate team.

Hurricane Isaac 2012

It’s a Presidential election year and thus the season for National Conventions. It’s also the season for hurricanes.

The Republican National Convention that was to begin in Tampa on August 27^th had to be pushed back a day due to concerns surrounding Hurricane Isaac. Fortunately for Florida it turned out that Isaac wasn’t too much of a threat. New Orleans and surrounding areas, on the other hand, weren’t quite as fortunate. Isaac made land fall near New Orleans on the 7^th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which stirred up many emotions for the citizens of the city. This time around, the levees seemed to withstand the storm surge, but there was still major flooding, debris, and power outages, which did lead to some emergency rescues.

The Red Cross and many other disaster relief organizations are doing what they can to help support our Gulf Coast friends…what can we all do to help our fellow citizens during this hardship?

We’ve all done it at one time or another…dropped something in the portable potty!

The question is, who has actually fished it out?

Thankfully, I have not dropped anything in there that has been of value so I’ve left it. I don’t think I could bring myself to dig it out, so I have made a rule for myself: what drops in the porta potty, stays in the porta potty…no matter what!

I have heard horror stories of keys, cell phones, watches, wallets and other things falling into the portable toilet. Unfortunately for some of the “victims”, they had to find a way to get their belongings out. I have heard of sticks, hangers, bubble gum, even bare hands being used to try to dig out the item. It might not be so bad if there wasn’t a huge drop, such a large basin, or rotting waste piled high.

Somehow, dropping something in a regular toilet doesn’t seem quite as traumatic. If there’s no other option, such as an indoor restroom or a restroom trailer where you can place your valuable items safely on a shelf or hang your bag on a hook, next time you go into a porta potty make sure to keep them out of range of the big bad basin. You’ll be a lot happier!

Another Olympic competition has come and gone. The closing ceremony will be on Sunday. We will say goodbye and thank you to the games, athletes, and to the city of London. It will be a new beginning for some, and an end of an era for others. We will say hello to the city of Rio de Janeiro.

We have enjoyed watching the elite athletes of the world compete. The games have provided entertainment to those who simply like to watch a good rivalry, have challenged those who still love to participate in the fitness world, and have introduced a dream to those who are young enough to work towards an Olympic goal.

While those of us who stayed here did not take part in the live Olympic experience, we’re hoping that those of you who did make the trek to London had the trip of a lifetime. And we’re hoping that you had a good restroom experience as well! Hopefully London provided plenty of portable restrooms throughout the city to make things easier and more convenient for all. We’re looking forward to seeing how Rio uses their resources to provide a clean, safe, and pleasant portable toilet experience for their incoming guests of 2016.

It was a “prank” that Ikea pulled on portable potty users at a furniture fair. The fair guests thought they were using a chemical portable toilet but actually, Ikea made the “toilet area” a door to a larger, nicer, decorated restroom. We get to see the shocked look on people’s faces that were recorded from the hidden camera. Ikea’s attempt to show everyone what they can do with little space was a triumph!

Swim Meet Failed to Provide Portable Restroom Trailer

I had the opportunity to attend a swim meet last weekend. It was loads of fun! People were everywhere…swimmers, parents, volunteers, and vendors. The atmosphere was relaxed, yet competitive. I think the Olympic spirit had overtaken the swimmers and was present in all!

Each team had their own “home base” where the coaches were, and they had separate lanes in another pool for warm-ups. The swimmers also had their own locker rooms and bathrooms, separate from the rest of us. At first, I thought that having our own restrooms would be great since no little wet bodies would be running in and out, making it messy and slippery. But once I saw what we were working with, I was sorely disappointed!

There were only two toilets in our restrooms. There was no air circulation, or paper towels, or soap. The toilets were stained and dirty, the sinks barely had any water flow, and you were hardly visible in the mirror. Yuck! Unfortunately, since it was so hot and humid, it was impossible to stop drinking water, which ultimately meant more visits to the bathroom.

When it was over and we were on our way out, I noticed a familiar looking trailer over on the other side of the property. It was locked up. As we passed by, I slowed down to get a better look, and to my horror it was a restroom trailer that wasn’t being used! I couldn’t help but wonder why in the world they didn’t move the portable bathroom so that the guests could use it?!?

I’m sure the portable restroom trailer would have won the gold for “best bathroom”!

Are portable restrooms an event at the Olympics?

The 2012 Olympics are upon us! Tonight is the opening ceremony which will mark the beginning of days of fierce competition for hundreds of athletes. They will be proudly representing their country, working hard to make a spot for their homeland in the book of medal winners. The games will culminate with the closing ceremony on Sunday, August 12.

The Olympics are the pinnacle of years, even lifetimes, of training. These elite athletes have gone through agony developing their bodies into machines for a chance to prove they are the best in the world. Within minutes, even seconds in some events, the world knows who the gold medal winner is. A lifetime of hopes and dreams are made or lost in a few moments.

Even though the games are held in London this year, we’re hoping that the city made preparations for enough portable bathrooms. For the next two weeks, London will be inundated with hundreds of thousands of guests. And with all that’s going on at different venues, we’re guessing the more portable restroom trailers that are located around the city, the better. Restroom trailers are an easy option for this type of event since they can be relocated and are generally very appreciated by the guests.

I had an unappealing but very common experience at the beach last weekend. As I’m sure most of you have done, we brought our food and drinks with us so that we could play a little, eat a little, play a little, etc. Well, eventually after all that eating and drinking, nature began to call.

I’m not a big fan of using the ocean as my “outlet” (speaking for myself only), and I was determined to avoid the public beach bathrooms. Knowing that they are always stinky, dirty, germy, and hot, I decided that not eating or drinking would help my efforts to stay out of there. But I was so hot that I needed to keep drinking water. Unfortunately, nature won the battle. So as I headed up to the bathroom, I envisioned and hoped that someone had just come through to clean it, knowing full well that was just a fantasy.

As I opened the door, I immediately got a whiff of the stench and a rush of the stale hot air. Gross! I held my breath, went in carefully so as not to touch more than I needed to, did what I had to do, rinsed my hands because there was no soap, and ran out before I passed out. I “washed” my hands in the ocean, thinking that maybe the salt would kill some of the germs I had acquired. What a miserable experience!

Never had I wished for a portable restroom trailer at the beach more than I did that day. I would have welcomed the experience of a clean, refreshing, pleasant smelling portable bathroom with fresh water and soap. A restroom trailer would have been a little piece of Heaven that day!

The recent article from the CDC on how to be prepared for a wedding emergency during hurricane season provided some great tips. Indeed, being prepared for an emergency on your wedding day is wise, and although we at Portable Restroom Trailers hope you won’t need to use any of your tactics, we like to say that it’s better to be safe than sorry. We’re thinking the CDC believes that, too. They recommend getting a kit, making a plan of action, and staying informed.

The CDC’s last bit of advice, “be informed” is simply being aware of what is happening. Have a point of contact inform you on the latest updates so that you aren’t caught off guard. In any emergency, being attentive to the surroundings, the environment, and the condition of the guests is essential. You can't make strong decisions if you don't know what's going on.

Being prepared always helps take away extra stress, but more importantly, can mean the difference between life and death. Your wedding day is special to you; so are your guests. A small amount of extra effort can pay off immeasurably if such an occasion arises as a hurricane on your wedding day.

Your wedding day should be calm and organized. Making a plan ahead of time is a great way to keep anxiety at a minimum and nerves calm. Make sure you have a guest list with contact information and a phone list of emergency numbers for the town you will be in. You and your wedding party should be aware of all emergency exits throughout the building, as well as any evacuation procedure. Someone in the wedding party should be assigned as the point of contact for any questions that arise, so that you can focus on other things. Should any kind of emergency develop, you’ll need to be able keep frustration levels low. The more prepared you are, the more composed you will be, which will keep your guests from panicking.

The article gives some valuable tips on how to survive a wedding that takes place in the midst of hurricane season. It’s always good practice to be prepared should something happen the weekend you plan to get married. The CDC recommends you follow three tips: get a kit, make a plan, and be informed.

For those of you who have already planned or are in the midst of planning a wedding, you know how essential a bridal emergency kit is. In the same way, a “storm emergency” kit can be just as vital. You can certainly purchase one, which would save you the hassle and a little bit of time; or you can make your own. However you acquire one, it should include some basics such as a first aid kit, water bottles, flashlights, plenty of extra batteries, snacks, hand wipes…anything you will need if you are stuck somewhere or have to evacuate. Appoint someone to bring it along and have it available in case it’s needed. But remember, anything you put in it will be sitting, most likely in a warm location, and without refrigeration.

This weekend we were at a horse show. It was rainy, muddy, and sticky. If you love country music, you’ll want to be in Nashville, TN this coming weekend! The 2012 CMA Music Festival will be in town June 7-10. Everything from concerts, to autograph signings, to photo-ops with your favorite artist, to fashion shows, to food and drinks are activities that the festival offers. You will have four fun-packed days and three exciting nights of this country music extravaganza. There should be no reason for anyone to be bored this weekend!

Make sure to bring your camera, as well as your sunglasses, a hat, and plenty of sunscreen. It will be typical June weather, hot and sunny. Oh, and should you get tired of the festival events, there are other activities to do around town. Already in 2012, we have seen a handful of earthquakes and an outbreak of deadly tornados. And hurricane season hasn’t even begun yet. It’s time to prepare for the relief that people will need as we head into the “super storm” time of year.

Natural disasters not only bring physical damage, but also emotional devastation to those who experience it. After the destruction of a natural disaster is when most people are vulnerable; wondering where do I go, what do I do, how do I begin to put my life back together? There are many organizations that aid in disaster relief, all offering something different. Some bring food and water, some offer laundry cleaning; others help rebuild homes and businesses, while others provide portable restrooms and showers. The other day I drove through a neighborhood that is still building homes. I noticed a little porta potty by the road. One of the construction guys happened to be going in while another was on his way there. On the way out, which was on the other side of the circular development, I noticed another porta potty by the road. My first thought was “why don’t they just put the porta potties in one central location?” Then I began to think about the benefits that a portable restroom trailer would offer.

According to news reports, teenagers have a new approach to getting a buzz. They are now turning to hand sanitizer for alcohol consumption. As sickening as it sounds, we all know that teenagers tend to have a “nothing will happen to me” mindset, which makes them willing to take on all kinds of risks. Throw that on top of the fact that everyone has access to hand sanitizer and we have a very dangerous new trend.

In order to kill germs, hand sanitizer must have very high alcohol content. This makes it easier and quicker to get the buzz teenagers are looking for, especially when mixed with salt. The salt separates the alcohol out, making it even stronger and more hazardous. A small amount goes a long way.

This new discovery isn’t dangerous strictly because of the consumption, but because teenagers have access to hand sanitizer wherever they go. It’s available at home, school, doctor’s offices, stores, porta potties, just to name a few. Imagine a group of teenagers hanging out on a Friday night, looking for something to do. When it comes to the common portable potty, dirty and unhygienic is what comes to mind. Washing hands after using the restroom, is especially important due to the vast amount of germs; however, porta potties never seem to help the cause since there are no sinks or running water.

Last year, a toddler and several others that attended the North Carolina State Fair ended up in the hospital with life threatening illnesses due to bacteria they had on their hands. Research from the Tork Green Hygiene Council shows that 85% of adults do not wash their hands after using a public restroom. People that do not wash their hands after being in a public place are at higher risk for serious illness. Not only is hand washing important after using the restroom, but also after touching public things, before and after handling food, or shaking someone’s hand. It is necessary to wash away harmful germs and bacteria in order to stay healthy.

In order to prevent unnecessary spreading of diseases in public places, such as the fair in North Carolina, portable restrooms that contain sinks with running water and an adequate amount of soap are essential. There are places where long lines are expected… Disney World, sporting events, state/county fairs. Porta potties, before a race is about to begin, are not in the category of acceptable places. Last weekend we ran in a 10K. While we were there we experienced the perfect example of why proper planning for a large crowd is required.

Ten minutes before the race was scheduled to start, we noticed an unbelievably long line in front of the porta potties. We knew all those people would never get through the line by the time the race was to start. We were right! While half of the line had to run to another set of porta johns on the other side of the grounds, the other half stayed in line. After what seemed like forever (a half an hour), we were on our way.

Even though the coordinator apologized and promised to have a better solution next year, the damage was already done. People were not happy. Embarrassment, along with the threat of injury from waiting around and not being properly warmed up, on top of the risk of disgruntled runners not returning next year is incentive for a better solution. Beach Sand Causes Stomach Aches? Not if You Wash Your Hands

Spring Break is right around the corner, and that means many of us will enjoy a few days away from the cold, lying on the beach in the sun, sipping a frozen drink topped with fruit and an umbrella.

The only thing that could possibly ruin this ideal vacation would be ending up stuck in your hotel room, nursing a bad stomach illness.

It's happened to all of us at one time or another… and we usually blame it on something we ate. But according to a new study just published in Epidemiology, that stomach ache may actually have been caused by the sand you were just laying on.

The study found E. coli bacteria and concentrations of sewage on several beaches they studied, and flow up studies on beaches across the country resulted in the same findings.

After interviewing nearly 5,000 beachgoers, they found that people digging in the sand were more likely to suffer from gastrointestinal distress one day after going to the beach, than those people who kept their hands out of the sand.

Does that mean you shouldn't dig in the sand when you're at the beach? Not at all. You can still build those epic sand castles… just make sure to wash your hands right after you put the final flag in the tallest turret.

And while a rinsing may help to reduce risk of developing an illness, the best way, according to the researchers, is a good scrubbing with soap and clean water.

Quick, Which is Dirtier: A Restroom Toilet or Your Computer Keyboard?

If you think a restroom toilet seat, especially a portable restroom toilet seat, is home to more harmful bacteria than your office computer keyboard, you'd be wrong. And it's enough to make you sick.

According to HealthJockey.com, a series of tests conducted in London offices found that more than one in ten keyboards tested positive for E. coli and staphylococcus, the bacteria responsible for food poisoning. And the results were more than 150 times the acceptable limit for bacteria.

Lead microbiologist, James Francis said, “Two keyboards examined under a microscope contained levels of bacteria so high they had to be removed from the office.” Adding, “One carried more bacteria than the average toilet seat and I've rarely come across anything as filthy in my 22-year career.”

How does a keyboard become dirtier than a much-used office toilet seat? Easy: people eating lunch at their desks, not regularly cleaning their desks and equipment with cleaners (the study found nearly half the employees neglected this), and not following proper hygiene by washing their hands after using the restroom. This is the perfect recipe for bacteria development. And increases the chances for an employee to become ill.

Restrooms, on the other hand, are cleaned regularly in most offices. And portable restrooms, like ours, are not only cleaned regularly, but some even come with a full-time attendant whose job it is to make sure they're sanitary at all times. Toilet Tissue Saves Paper Mill and 176 Jobs

While the digital age has driven the demand for paper down, resulting in the closing of hundreds of paper mills nationwide, there is one type of paper that will never see a downturn in demand: Toilet paper. And it's this lowly staple of restrooms everywhere that's the reason one shuttered mill has been reopened, giving 176 people back their jobs.

According to a Wall Street Journal article the last mill to close in the tiny town of Gorham, New Hampshire, has been reopened. And the 100-year-old Gorham Paper & Tissue mill has the growing US population, and the demand for toilet paper that comes with it, to thank.

In the past, the mills in northern New Hampshire created rolls of writing paper, newsprint and printing paper, but as email and eBooks became more popular, the need for paper dropped an estimated 61% between 2001 and 2011. Workers and families who had worked at these mills for generations, suddenly found themselves unemployed.

And they stayed out of work until a private-equity firm noticed the demand for toilet tissue rose over 7% during the same time period. So they bought the mill, hired back many of the workers, and plan on pumping $60 million into the mill. That's a whole lot of green paper to bet on toilet paper.

Willis Blevins, the 70-year-old manager of Gorham Paper & Tissue said, "I know of nothing that can replace it. You can do digital on books and financials and all this, but it's hard to do digital on tissue paper, hand towels and so forth." He added, "Your bath tissue is always going to be there, in my opinion. What are you going to replace it with?"

Did the Mysterious Purple Squirrel Visit a Portable Toilet?

A Pennsylvania couple recently found an odd intruder invading their backyard: a purple squirrel.

According to reports, Connie and Percy Emert of Jersey Shore, PA had been trapping pesky animals who were stealing food from the bird feeders in their backyard. And last Sunday, they caught a highly unusual squirrel. A purple squirrel.

The brightly colored rodent has caused quite a stir, both on news stations and online, and triggered a slew of theories as to how he got that color, including gene mutation, and the result of a strange diet. A local game warden even took hair samples to analyze.

But the theory we subscribe to? We're going to guess the Mysterious Purple Squirrel of Central Pennsylvania simply stopped off in a local porta potty… and fell in. Getting covered in the blue liquid used to control odors. Either that, or a local beauty school student was practicing on local tree dwelling rodents, because she ran out of volunteers. But the porta potty theory is more solid. Usually our top-end portable restroom trailers are hired out for exclusive galas, private (read: very expensive) parties, and your more niche sporting events, like the PGA tournaments and the Kentucky Derby. So it’s nice that this week a lot of them are scattered around Indianapolis available for the large crowds at the Super Bowl Village. And while you might think a trip to the village would be an expensive proposition, happily it looks like that’s not the case.

According to reports by a pair of local Indy news teams, WISH TV 8 and WTHR 13, organizers and local merchants are doing their best to keep costs down so the average family can enjoy themselves, without breaking the bank.

They tracked the spending of a typical family of four, and found that hotel rooms close to the action can be had for under $100 for the night, and if you want to keep your car there, tack on another $17. (Which isn’t that terrible, considering at some sporting events, parking for just a few hours can be $20 or more.)

Feeding that family can get tricky, but if you’re willing to skip the street vendors, who tend to be a little pricey (around $16 for a burger, fries and a soft drink at one stand), and don’t mind fast food, you can save more than a few dollars. Some savvy locals have been enjoying the festivities outside at the village, then walking down to the Circle Centre Mall and having something to eat in the food court. It’s less expensive, and they can sit down at tables and also enjoy some indoor heat.

And the events at the big game aren’t out of reach either. WISH TV reports one family found a 4-pack of tickets online to the NFL Experience for just $90. If you don’t need the 4-pack, you can save $3 per ticket by buying them in person, instead of online. You will, however, have to wait in long lines. And for some attractions, those long lines can mean you could get turned away due to sellouts. That’s what’s been happening at the wildly popular zip line that lets you glide over the crowd, tethered to a cable. Want to avoid missing out? If you want to skip the long lines and get into special events, you can get an NFL-Xtra pass for $46 and get in like a VIP.

Even though it's still cold outside, it's getting closer and closer to summer event season. And for many small towns and cities that means preparing for an influx of visitors and tourists. Along with an influx of visitor and tourist dollars.

While that may have been a hit in the 60′s, today we are spoiled by hot showers and strong deodorant. For that very reason, shower trailers are gaining popularity in the event planning arena. Having a shower trailer on site can turn a single day event into a multi-day festival, like the sky diving festival Portable Restroom Trailers will be providing units for over labor day weekend! We’ve done Nascar events, horse races and shows, weddings, university graduations, biker events, NFL and other sporting events, wine festivals, and the list goes on and on.
