The debate lives on…air dryers or paper towels?There still seems to be a question as to which option is better to use before leaving the restroom. We’ve found some useful information, so if you’re taking hygiene into consideration, you might want to keep reading.The University of Westminster, as well as the microbiology department of Portland Community College, conducted a study and found that all air dryers, including jet dryers and hot air dryers, increase bacteria transmission significantly. The problem is that air dryers don’t kill or remove the bacteria, they merely blow it around. As a result, the bacteria lands on and contaminates other items in the restroom, including your hands. Once those contaminated items leave the restroom and touch something else, the bacteria is spread to places far and wide, and can make you very sick.Other similar studies, such as that of the Mayo Clinic, have shown that paper towels actually reduce the amount of bacteria and show no spread of organisms. Given that paper towels provide friction, they are much more efficient at removing the microbes from your hands. Another benefit to using paper towels is that they quickly and fully dry your hands. Since bacteria spread faster and more easily in moist environments, the risk of taking some microorganisms with you is increased when you leave with damp hands. And if you’re always in a rush like me, you’ve dealt with the frustration of air dryers taking too long, so you (like me) leave before your hands are fully dry. Yet, when paper towels are present, we are able to easily and completely dry our hands in a more timely fashion.Lastly, to avoid bacteria getting back onto your hands after washing, it is a good idea to use a paper towel to turn off the faucet and open the door. That way, the paper towel will acquire the germs, not you. After you’re out, you can throw the germ filled paper towel away. If hygiene is your top priority, then paper towels are the best choice…and so are restroom trailers. Since the Boston Marathon Bombing on April 15th of this year the safety of spectators at outdoor events has been a hot topic. Lou Marciani, the director of the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4), has done many interviews talking about how important it is. In a recent interview with ESPN he discussed the difficulty in keeping spectators safe, especially during large, open events.According to Marciani, explosives seem to be the biggest fear for the NCS4, thus they are doing everything they can to keep everyone safe during spectator sports events. This includes perimeters, screening backpacks, and added security at all open events like marathons, horse races, and golfing events, such as the PGA Tour and the US Open. In addition to security at the main venue, the NCS4 is also moving their security away from the main venue to various locations throughout the event site, such as parking lots, because with explosives, these areas are just as vulnerable as the main venue.The NCS4 even has safety certifications that venues can attain by completing a thorough evaluation. The most recognized is the Sport Event Security Aware (SESA) certification. This certification is for any level organization with a sports venue. The purpose is to provide facilities with standards to assess various risks, information in order to identify vulnerabilities, and the necessary knowledge to develop plans, policies, and actions if necessary, with the hopes that preparation and awareness will increase the safety of guests.With spectator safety being the utmost importance right now, restroom trailers are a great way to provide guests with an added sense of security. Unfortunately this makes it way too easy for us to pick them up and take them with us. A report from MSN states that public restrooms are the dirtiest and most risky places for germs to be picked up. And these aren’t just “sniffle” germs; they’re the kinds that make us sick with diarrhea or fever and chills, and if bad enough can put us in the hospital (which by the way has the cleanest restrooms).Bathrooms provide the perfect environment for microorganisms to grow. When using a public restroom, keep these facts in mind: The first stall is always best…contrary to popular belief, the last stall is used the most so there’s 400 times more bacteria than in the first stall. The toilet seat is actually cleaner than the floor! The nastiest germs come from the floor so avoid touching it and placing bags on it; otherwise, setting your purse on the floor could place you in the 30% that end up with fecal matter on the bottom of it. Dry your hands completely before leaving. Since bacteria thrive in moisture, leaving your hands damp while touching door handles could be risky. Use paper towels rather than air dryers…studies show that air dryers can increase bacteria by 160%. Paper towels decrease bacteria by 76%. Another way to cut back on the amount of microscopic critters you take with you is a portable restroom trailer. Our Luxury Series Event Restroom Trailer graced the beautiful fields at Omaha Country Club in Omaha, Nebraska for one of the most exciting and record breaking weekends in the golf tournament’s history.The first U.S. Senior Open Championship was played June 26-29, 1980. It was established to promote the increasing popularity of senior golfers and was originally open to golfers age 55 and older with a minimum of an 8-stroke handicap. A year later the age was dropped to 50 and older to make the tournament more competitive.After the first 2 rounds on Saturday, Michael Allen held a 5-stroke lead, the largest lead after 36 holes in the tournament’s history. However, Kenny Perry made a run for the lead in the third round. Coming from 10 strokes back, he posted a 64 in the third round to bring him within 2 shots of Allen.Kenny Perry made history by finishing the fourth round with a 63 to win the tournament. His final round score is the best in the Senior Golf Open’s 34 years. His 127 in the final two rounds also marks a record for the tournament.Omaha Country Club enjoyed one of the largest turn outs the USGA has ever seen for this exciting comeback victory. It was a perfect weekend at the club and we were extremely exciting to be part of it as our restroom trailer provided additional restroom accommodations to the spectators. The study of Triclosan, a chemical present in many consumer products for antibacterial purposes, seems like it is unending since the study has been ongoing since the late sixties. And still there is no final conclusion. The answer to the question of whether or not the ingredient is hazardous to humans remains to be seen.Triclosan is found in many antibacterial soaps and sanitizers. Although the evidence is inconclusive as to whether it actually is safe, no one seems to be panicking yet. However, there are results from some studies that have warranted further review.Additionally, there is no scientific data that proves that the chemical offers an added benefit for killing germs. In fact, the FDA has stated that they do not have evidence that Triclosan provides an extra benefit to health. They also do not have evidence that antibacterial soaps and body washes that contain Triclosan provide any benefit over washing with regular soap and water. So for now, it looks like old fashioned soap and water rather than anitbacterial products is the best way to go.Since portable restroom trailers contain soap and warm running water, as well as flushable toilets, they are a safe and sanitary choice for restroom needs.
