The school we’re working with can trace its history back well into the 19th century, when it was founded by the local Episcopal Church. A private citizen donated money to the church to fund a professional teacher for the parish school – and the school was named after the first Episcopal bishop of North Carolina.
The church and the school remained connected for more than 100 years – until the school transitioned to become non-sectarian in 1966 and then moved to its current location in 1969. At that time, the school taught primary classes only. Expansion happened quickly, as a middle school and high school were opened in 1971 – and the first class of seniors graduated in 1973.
