Who are the Salesians?
The Salesians are a religious community founded by Italian Catholic priest Fr. John Bosco. He began his work in Italy in the mid-1800s. He established an oratory where homeless poor boys and young men with little education could live and gather.
His mission became a movement inspired by his educational style based on reason, religion, and kindness. He developed the Salesian Preventative System, a teaching method that focused on love rather than punishment. He transformed the young men at the oratory into priests and brothers who would guide his religious congregation, the Salesian Society.
Bosco went on to establish a network of organizations to carry on his work. He founded the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians dedicated to the care and education of poor girls. He also founded a movement of laypersons called the Association of Salesian Cooperators with the mission to educate the poor.
