New Year's Eve in Times SquareThis New Year’s Eve, Times Square was filled with block-long security pens starting at 42nd Street and stretching to 48th street. By noon Thursday, the 45th street and 46th street pens were close to full. Entry to the pens required passage through a security checkpoint and metal detector wand inspection. Backpacks were prohibited but occupants could bring in items in clear plastic bags. The security measures make Times Square "look like some type of quarantine," according to attendee Jay Bulock, 32.
Fans lined up for hours to get into the festivities and once they were in, they would not be allowed re-entry if needed to “relieve” themselves. Party goers restricted their liquid intake, and even wore adult diapers as a last resort. By the time the ball dropped, some had been in the pens for 19 hours!
For Jamie Bethel, 38, a South Carolina nursing student and one of the two million attendees (many needing the restroom), New Year’s Eve in New York City has lived up to the hype.
“I always used to see it every year on TV. It looked so fun I wanted to come down,” she said. “It’s exactly as I pictured it. Good music and it feels like I’m at a party. If I had a bathroom, I’d be set.”
