THE LEGEND OF THE PRETZEL
Snyder’s is a company rooted in family business and the American dream. Back in 1909, their founding company, Hanover Canning Company, was founded and began producing olde tyme pretzels. In the early 1920s, Grandma Eda and her husband began making potato chips by frying them in a kettle and would sell them door to door throughout their neighborhood and attended fairs and markets. Meanwhile, her son, William, and his wife began making angel cakes and selling them locally as well.
Seeing an opportunity for business, the family joined forces in 1924 and created Snyder’s Bakery, which made everything from cakes to noodles and became a popular spot in the area. Their business grew, and a mass snack production process became necessary.
By the 1940s, business was booming and the need to open multiple plants for production arose, and the Snyder’s quickly gained popularity across the east coast. Despite their success, an unexpected family death occurred, and the family began selling their business to Hanover Canning.The Bechtel Pretzel Company was also acquired by Hanover, and Bill Bechtel himself created the original sourdough hard pretzel recipe that is still used and enjoyed by consumers today.
Nineteen years after Snyder’s was acquired, the company chose to do a spin-off of each individual company that was under the Hanover umbrella, allowing each company to focus on their specialty. Each of these new spin-offs was a hit, growing twice as fast as the industry average.
In December of 1989, the flagship Hanover pretzel production plant was burned down in a dramatic fire that consumed the building for days. Despite this unfortunate turn of events, the employees, proud of the company their worked for, banned together and rebuilt the establishment from the ground up and continued to expand and perfect it. Today, it is a 400,000 square foot facility.
Despite the ups and downs the Snyder’s brand experienced, success was always around the corner, and they remain the leading snack producer today and a brand label that most Americans recognize.
