The Latest on the Transgender Bathroom Debate & Unisex Restrooms

A few weeks ago, we published a post covering the history and most recent legislation that’s sparked a national debate on unisex bathrooms and public accommodations for transgender persons. It’s a discussion that continues to rage on, pushing more states than just North Carolina to draft up legislation. In response, the Obama Administration has recently issued a statement and we’re beginning to see the need for federal guidelines on the topic. To get educated on HB2 and the now notorious North Carolina “bathroom bill,” we recommend reading our last post here. From 2015 to 2016, much of our national dialog and unrest in civil rights has been related to the LGBT community. Fueled by the Supreme Court’s historic ruling in favor of same-sex marriage, many states have sought to button up their conservative policies and introduce/enact anti-LGBT legislation. The most well-known of these has been North Carolina’s bathroom bill, passed in March 2016. However, there are more than 100 active bills across 22 states – covering a wide range of categories – discriminating against the LGBT community in one way or another. As it relates to transgender bathroom access, the interactive map below (latest updated May 4, 2016) shows a pictorial representation of current legislation.Status of Transgender Access Legislation | InsideGovSurprisingly, it’s been the business community that has played a major role so far in limiting the actions of state governments. Just this week, 49ers owner, Jed York, spoke out against North Carolina’s controversial bathroom law and followed it up with a $75,000 give to the LGBT-rights advocacy group, Equality North Carolina.  While it’s nice to think that the influence of private money on public policy can regulate this issue long-term, the White House has spoken out in hopes of steering the conversation on a national level. In letters issued on May 13, 2016 from the Justice Department and Education Department, the Obama Administration directed public schools to allow transgender access to restrooms. Citing Tile IX, which prohibits sexual discrimination at education facilities receiving federal funding, the letters mean transgender students must be allowed to use the bathroom of their choice. In response, 11 states have sued the Obama administration in a suit filed on Wednesday (May 25, 2016). The states of Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Utah, West Virginia, Wisconsin, along with the Arizona Department of Education and Maine Gov. Paul LePage are listed as plaintiffs-and most likely the first outspoken challengers in what will be an ongoing debate. At Portable Restroom Trailers, LLC, we are continuing to stay on top of the most current events and local legislation related to unisex bathrooms and the transgender restrooms debate. Unisex Restroom Trailers & the Transgender Bathroom Debate

It’s been almost two months since our home state started making national news – and the controversy over transgender bathrooms and LGBT rights is only continuing to heat up. On February 22, 2016, Charlotte, NC passed a city-wide ordinance expanding the state’s anti-discrimination laws so that LGBT persons would also be granted protection in places of “public accommodation.” As a direct response, North Carolina’s General Assembly proposed and passed House Bill 2 (HB2) shortly thereafter. Now known as the “bathroom bill,” HB2 repealed Charlotte’s local ordinance which would have allowed transgender people to use the bathroom of the gender they identify as. Instead, it made HB2 the final word on North Carolina law -overriding cities and local governments- and restricted protection from discrimination solely based on “race, religion, national origin, color, age, biological sex, and handicaps.”Needless to say, North Carolina and its Governor, Pat McCory, have been in the national spotlight ever since, sparking intense debate over LGBT rights versus the safety and privacy of others in public restrooms. One side is arguing for full inclusion, promoting that men should be able to use women’s restrooms and vice versa if that’s how they internally identify. Others believe this opens up a host of safety issues and privacy concerns for vulnerable citizens like women and children, who may be taken advantage of by predators and other offenders. Hoping to bring both sides together, Portable Restroom Trailers, LLC has spent the last few weeks educating clients and consumers on unisex bathroom and unisex shower trailer units. We have also been increasing in-stock unisex restroom inventory, while ordering/delivering custom units in the meantime.View our unisex bathroom and shower trailer inventory here. >>“It’s amazing to see how much controversy our state has sparked,” says Portable Restroom Trailers, LLC’s Operations Manager, Teri Pahon. “While much of the media coverage has been focused on Charlotte’s local ordinance and North Carolina’s response, this is a conversation that’s occurring in cities around the country; we hear it every day from customers. How do we allow transgender people to use public facilities, while maintaining a safe environment for women and children? To be honest, it’s a simple answer−and we want to make sure municipalities, venue locations, and other organizations know about the options available to them. We have a wide selection of unisex bathroom and shower trailer units that feature private stalls for men, women, or transgender persons. They can be used as a permanent solution or a temporary facility and they are truly the most cost effective way to appease both sides of the debate while offering clean, sanitary facilities to all. We are working hard to get the word out and foster a conversation that educates people there is already a solution available that bridges the gap.”We will continue to stay on top of the latest news and information coming out on this topic. Make sure you’re following us on Facebook to keep up!

OVER OR UNDER? The debate has raged on for years (124 to be exact) but if you are an over person, then we have good news for you! Even though the Chinese were the first to use a form of toilet paper over 2,000 year ago, it wasn’t until Scott Wheeler submitted his patent in 1891 that the modern version of the toilet paper roll was born.  The original patent was recently discovered and it has come to light after all these years to find that outside or OVER WAS THE WAY IT WAS INTENDED TO BE! Portable Restrooms has understood the importance of saving water drop by drop since its beginning in 2007 by offering a full line of portable restrooms designed to work harmoniously with our environment.
