Satisfying Government Regulations with Portable Restroom Rentals

While you might not expect it, part of working with restroom rentals is becoming somewhat of an expert on various government regulations about restroom facilities – and the guidelines for their capacity and accessibility.  Over the years, we’ve come across a staggering number of different rules and regulations.  We’d like to say we’ve seen it all, but we know that there are plenty of random regulations out there that we haven’t come across yet.

At the federal level, restrooms are subject to regulation by OSHA, the ADA, the Department of Labor, the General Services Administration, and more.  While that might be intimidating for some, most of the regulatory issues we’ve encountered have actually been at the state, county, or municipal level.  Some states and regions have very strict rules about very specific aspects of public restrooms.

One aspect of compliance involves making sure that the portable restroom rentals we deliver are compliant with the jurisdiction where they will be deployed.  But more often, we delivery portable restrooms to help businesses comply with their local regulations when their brick and mortar restrooms are found to be insufficient.  Altering bathrooms requires significant structural work, which often does not fit into a small business’s operating budget.  But we have helped many businesses all around the country to comply with local regulations using portable restroom rentals that solve their problem without hurting their bottom line.

Portable Restroom Rental for Gas Station

We were contacted recently by a company that owns hundreds of gas stations throughout the Appalachian region.  One of their older store locations had been closed by authorities who found that the facilities in their convenience store were out of date and no longer in compliance with local regulations.  The company closed the building in order to begin renovations, but they needed to find a way to keep the gas pumps operational so that the store would not lose its regular clientele to nearby competitors.

They quickly secured a temporary structure and began setting up shop on their parking lot near the original building.  They installed cash registers and point-of-sale systems.  The temporary structure even allowed them to keep a small selection of food, drinks and convenience items available for retail sale.  Before they opened their temporary operation, they contacted local authorities to ensure that they were in compliance with all regulations.  And it was at this point that they learned that they were subject to a regional regulation which dictates a minimum restroom capacity for all retail operations – including gas stations.

When they contacted us, they needed to find a solution as soon as possible.  Each day that passed represented a loss of revenue at the gas pumps.  And they were already incurring costs for the temporary structure and equipment.  They needed portable restroom rentals, and they needed them quickly.  We’re very happy to say that we were able to get a unit shipped out immediately to get their gas pumps flowing again.  We helped them wade through their local requirements for capacity and accessibility, and we helped them select a unit from our inventory of rental units that met all their needs, well within their budget.

Restroom Rentals to Satisfy Local Regulations

The Comfort Elite ADA + 2-station unit that we delivered features one dedicated men’s suite, one dedicated women’s suite, and a unisex ADA compliant suite; much like the restrooms found in the typical American gas station.  And while this is a portable restroom, the facilities and features you’ll find inside are noticeably nicer than what you will find in many gas stations today.

The men’s and women’s suites both have flushable authentic china toilets.  The men’s suite also includes a wall-mounted china urinal.  The back side of both suites has a wall-to-wall locking vanity with a solid surface countertop that includes a molded sink basin and an in-counter wastebasket.  A liquid soap dispenser and paper towel dispenser are securely mounted on either side of the sink.  And above the vanity there is a large framed shatterproof glass mirror.

These units are built to withstand heavy foot traffic with mar-resistant laminated interior walls, 1-piece non-skid rubber flooring, and a large 360-gallon waste tank.  Their simple construction makes them simple to clean out and sanitize.  And with locking external doors and abundant LED porch lighting, they’re just as safe and secure as an indoor restroom.

ADA Compliant Restroom Rentals

When we began looking into our client’s requirements, we soon realized that they would need their restroom rentals to comply with federal ADA regulations.  The Comfort Elite ADA + 2-station was a perfect match.  In addition to the dedicated men’s and women’s suites, there is a unisex ADA compliant suite that meets or exceeds all ADA regulations for public restrooms.

A folding exterior ramp provides safe and easy access to the ADA suite with 1 ¼” stainless steel safety railing.  And a hydraulic kneeling axle system lowers the entire trailer to ground level with the push of a button.  Inside the ADA suite, there is sufficient room to allow for a full 360-degree turning radius for a standard size wheelchair.  Every aspect of the ADA suite is designed with compliance in mind, from the push-button toilet flush mechanism to the accessible sink controls and wrap-around safety guide rails.
